Children often sail toy boats, anxiously following their progress, anticipating their fate in turbulent waters.
Later, some of us discover the boundless, chaotic sea, full of surprises.
The goblet with sailboat is a microcosm of life or, rather, of how we experience life and bear up under current circumstance. Hence, there is a saying about a "storm in a tea cup" that we use when someone is unduly worried about insignificant matters.
At the same time, through recreating such a complex environment as that of the sea or the atmosphere, we learn about (and get to understand) the world around us, its unity and beauty.
