Hula Hoops

A man and a woman bound together by the golden spinning hoops are whirling in a dream-like dance. This is the dance of their common life and the spinning hoops symbolize its outward flow. The many rotations intertwine the threads of the invisible fabric of their love.

The masks covering the faces of the dancing lovers create a carnival atmosphere. The carnival is associated with a sense of anonymity, however, its symbolism is known to be ambivalent; joy and laughter combined with danger and unpredictability. Illustrating this unpredictability, the fortune-telling Tarot cards are precariously standing around the couple. The nakedness of the loving pair reminds us that one is defenseless before the forces of destiny – our treasured happiness could collapse as easily as a house of cards.
