SOS is an international distress signal, the standard cry for help.

-
This phrase has its origins in the Morse code of the early 1900s and was used by ships in need of rescue.

-
SOS is often taken to mean "save our souls."
The flame of the burning candle is a symbol of the human soul in trepidation – it flickers and waivers. Candlelight brings hope of salvation to the sea voyagers in despair. Mysterious hands folded in prayer arise in the dark. They are the hands of the Savior, simultaneously protecting the flame from the wind and focusing the beam of light on the vessel in distress. This troubled ship presents an allegory of a lonely man seeking salvation in the ocean of life.
